Getting to Los Roques

By Air

Los Roques has a tiny airport that operates only domestic flights. Every day, about nine of these flights leave the airport. This airport can handle roughly 414 passengers per day. There are several operators like LTA, Blue Star Airlines, Sundance, Viajes Valencia Los Roques and Rainbow that connect this tiny destination to Caracas. The aircraft, which is a swanky Dash 7, can accommodate 48 passengers and takes only 30 minutes to fly down to Los Roques from Maiquetia, the national airport of Caracas. The traffic varies according to the season. The airfares range from premium to low cost. Though this airport does not operate international flights, Caracas is well connected to international airports like Bogota, Miami, Madrid, Lima and Panama City.

Though many Caribbean cruise liners regularly halt for a day in and around Caracas, there is no national passenger service available, despite the port of La Guiara being one of the busiest ports in Venezuela.

A lot of tourists coming to Los Roques bring their personal yachts. Though there is no organised ferry service to this archipelago, the boat operators here make it really simple for you to go from one island to another.

Getting Around Los Roques

A good option for getting around Los Roques is on a Los Roques tour. Your posada stay will normally include boat trips to the keys. You can also get in touch with boat captains who you will find in and around the Gran Roque harbour, at 9:30 am, most of the mornings. Whether it is the lanchas or boats, you will be dropped at the islands in the morning and will be picked up at around four in the evening.

You can easily walk through the entire village of Gran Roque. You can also cover all the tiny islands on foot and it is because of this, that there are no car rental services anywhere on the Los Roques Archipelago. It is often said that the rubbish cart is probably the only vehicle one can see here! Though Los Roques Archipelago is very safe for tourists, you will need to take the usual precautions, just as you do in any other tourist destination.
